Wagon Brakes

Scenery is essential to world-building onstage, but it presents some logistical issues. Larger set pieces can be heavy and cumbersome — in the worst-case scenarios, they can even be dangerous. Fortunately, wagon brakes can reduce risk by securing scenery in place.

The Importance of Quality Wagon Brakes

Castors make quickly changing scenery possible, but their mobility also poses a problem. If someone accidentally hits a wagon, the platform may shift, potentially running into other set pieces, disrupting the scene, and generally taking the audience out of the moment.

Wagon brakes prevent castors from sliding by lifting them off the floor. This equipment must be reliable, as a sudden slip can bring the entire platform crashing down, potentially damaging the scenery, stage, and other set pieces. There's also a real danger of actors being injured by falling scenery.

Features To Consider When Purchasing

When considering wagon brakes, take note of the following:

  • Total weight of the platform
  • Condition of the stage
  • Platform height

Standard wagon brakes can only handle about 300 pounds; if the scenery exceeds this amount, the brakes cannot reliably lift the platform. Heavier wagons need heavy-duty brakes, which can handle up to 800 pounds.

Once you determine whether a standard or heavy-duty wagon brake fits your needs, consider whether you want a standard or rubber foot spindle. You may also need an extension spindle if the wagon rides high.
