Case Study: Motorized Security Curtains

Cascade Coil asked us to partner with them on a project at Western Kentucky University. They had been asked to provide mesh security curtains for three food venues as part of the Commons at Helms Library building renovation project. Cascade Coil is known for its woven metal coil mesh panels (think fireplace screen, but on large scale with many beautiful finishes available). They were happy to provide the mesh panels requested but didn’t have a motorized track system that could handle the long, complex serpentine curved layouts and weights involved in these systems. The most challenging of the three was for Spencer’s Coffee in which the curtain was to fully wrap the free-standing venue, with over 100 feet of track and six corners where the track had to turn up to 90-degree corners at a tight radius.

Since they had partnered with Rose Brand on previous projects, they turned to our expertise to provide an elegant track and drive solution for these three venues. Ultimately the Rose Brand Chain Rail system proved to be the right fit for the project. This chain driven track product has a very small profile that was able to fit in the ceiling recesses provided, was able to handle the tight radius corners and motors were able to be concealed above the ceilings of the food venues. There were numerous Covid related construction delays and other challenges, but the project was finally completed in 2022. After a soft opening in April, the venues fully opened for the return of students in August.
