Black Stage Curtains (Black Masking)
From high school auditoriums to large arenas, masking curtains and drapery absorb light, hide production elements, and direct the audience's focus to the action. Black theater curtains come in a variety of leg, border, tab, and other custom designs to fit the dimensions of your stage, black box, stadium, or soundstage. Although they're commonly referred to as 'blacks,' masking curtains can come in a wide variety of colors to match the palette of your proscenium or production design. Masking fabrics have a matte finish to prevent unwanted light reflection.
Black stage curtains have traditionally been made of cotton velour because of its matte quality. However, they are now less preferred than synthetics. Synthetics have now improved to the point of near indistinguishability and are more often used for longer-term installations. Synthetic velours are often easier to maintain. They can be cleaned more easily because the flame retardancy is inherent to the fabric fibers. It does not wash out or stain when spot cleaned.
Rose Brand offers the largest selection of masking curtains and fabrics in the industry, whether you’re looking to purchase custom-made drapery or to rent. Our experience runs the gamut from producing simple black theater curtains for high school auditoriums to the provisioning of 132,000 square feet of masking drapes to control lighting in the NCAA Final Four tournament at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
