Wagon Brakes (aka Platform Brakes) & Locks
Wagon brakes (or platform brakes) and locks work in conjunction with casters. Once the scenery is rolled into position, these brakes are used to hold scenery in place temporarily without having to drill holes in the stage floor. They work by lifting the scenery off its casters and also provide quick and quiet release when movement is eventually required. Often used in pairs, mounted on each side of the scenic element. Choosing the right one for your production comes down to which spindle type and weight capacity is required.

FAQs
Which wagon brake is right for my project?
When it comes to choosing brakes, there are really only a couple of considerations to think about. Firstly, do you require heavy duty or regular brakes? This can be determined by understanding which piece of scenery or equipment you intend to lock into place. Heavy duty brakes have a weight capacity of 800 lbs, while regular brakes can hold 300 lbs. Next, do you need a rubber foot or not and do you require an extension for the spindle? This can be determined by looking at the type of stage you’ll be working on and the equipment height. Overall, choosing a wagon brake is fairly straightforward.
How many wagon brakes are required for a piece of scenery or equipment?
There are no hard and fast rules about how many wagon brakes to install on a piece of scenery or equipment. Although, a minimum of two is definitely recommended. The largest consideration when deciding how many stage brakes to use comes down to the size and weight of the piece being moved around. For example, in the case of smaller scenery or equipment, you can limit the number of brakes to only a couple on each side to ensure platform security.
